a Public health insurance includes Medicaid, State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), and Medicare coverage.
b Comprehensive coverage includes any insurance coverage or health plan that pays for both doctor visits and hospital stays but could not be conclusively determined to be public or private coverage.
c No survey could include a complete list of all conditions that CSHCN may have. This survey included 16 conditions. Nine percent of CSHCN did not have one of these 16 conditions.
d Children whose conditions never affected their daily activities reflect either the effects of treatment used to manage the condition or the nature of the condition.
e Percentages do not equal 100% because CSHCN may have met more than one criterion.
NOTE: Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) were identified using the five-item CSHCN Screener. Children are considered to have a special health care need if they have a parent-reported physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition that has lasted or is expected to last 12 months or longer and that requires health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required generally by children of the same age.
